Directors’ Statement

When planning “sad disco,” Mandy’s first time directing a film project, we knew we wanted it to draw heavily from her artistic style, influences, and passion. We dove into a concept that moves us both deeply: the ability art has to completely take us away. Disco Man became very special to both of us as a human (ish?) embodiment of imagination and creativity. As far as casting goes, we couldn’t have asked for better than Reece Moseley and Elise Hendricks; seeing them bring these characters to life was incredibly moving.

As best friends and filmmaking collaborators since middle school, co-directing a project together was an amazing experience. On a more personal level, it gave us the freedom and motivation to create something truly beautiful that, even as we grow and evolve, we can always look back on with pride.

trivia

  • In most scenes, Disco Man either stands still or holds hands with the female lead so that actress Elise Hendricks could guide his steps. Each take had to be practiced multiple times without the disco ball head before the crew started rolling.

  • Elise's slow-motion "performance footage" required her to mouth the words to mxmtoon's "sad disco" very quickly so that the footage would match the song when slowed down.

  • Sam's grandfather, a contractor by trade, was also responsible for the artificial rain used in the film One Night in Squatchtown. Upon taking a jigsaw to the disco ball, he was dismayed to learn its interior was made of styrofoam.
