Director’s Statement
In 2021, the All American High School Film Festival partnered with Atlantic Records to create a custom category. Student filmmaking teams had access to a small selection of songs from some of Atlantic’s rising artists. The challenge: make a music video set to one of the songs, then submit by the deadline.
We chose Sara Kays’ “Remember That Night?”, a heartbreaking, nostalgic song about lost love. While the video didn’t receive any nominations or wins at All American, it was our first attempt at participating in one of their remote filmmaking competitions, which we would go on to do again multiple times (even winning 2023’s Winter Film Invitational with the short film newyearseve.mp4). In 2023, AAHSFF again offered a music video custom category. Because of our past experience, we decided to enter again, producing sad disco, one of my favorite Picture’s Up projects to date.

trivia
-
A production assistant spun a light around to give the appearance of passing street lights on the actress' face. In side-profile shot, a blue screen was used to composite a moving roadway into the frame.
B-roll of landmarks and out-of-focus lights was shot days later in Gainesville, Georgia.

Zoe Davidson and Reece Moseley had never met before production began. After their first day of shooting together, the crew used RGB lights to create various lighting conditions on the two actors. The images were then photoshopped with new backgrounds to give the illusion of a long history between the pair.
