Out for delivery

Director’s Statement

“Out for Delivery” was born as a challenge to test the limits of my cinematography. Inspired by a YouTube video uploaded by my former employer, Sozo Bear Films, I set out to shoot a short film in a vertical (9:16) aspect ratio.

I didn’t just want to shoot vertically; I wanted the film’s orientation to play a role in the storytelling. I chose settings and framed shots in such a manner that, hopefully, the unconventional frame would shine.

The film also includes my personal favorite monologue in a Picture’s Up film, but you’ll have to watch until the end to see that.

trivia

  • The character Brad previously appeared in k., another short about his romantic misadventures. Out for Delivery is not only a canonical sequel, but a spiritual one; a repetitive, sketch comedy-esque structure is used in both films to portray Brad's neurotic, overthinking nature.

Director Sam Morgan also stated in the film's behind-the-scenes video that he likes to think A Halloween to Forget and Remember That Night? are both also canon within the same universe.

  • The video, titled "Why Vertical Filmmaking is the Future of Cinema," was produced by Luke Pilgrim, co-founder of Sozo Bear Films (director Sam Morgan's former employer).

  • The pizza box itself had previously been purchased as a prop for A Halloween to Forget. Both characters' wardrobes came almost entirely from the actors' personal closets (Brad's featured a patch that had to be purchased online, as well as a windbreaker borrowed from Sam's grandfather).
